I do feel bad for any early adopters, especially of the gold (includes the $30 dlc code with no real extras worth $90) version because of how quickly the price drops to $30, and that the DLC will hopefully arrive by the end of 2023 (only Tower of Doooom with 4 o’s at this time).
There are plenty of quality of life features over the previous game, Kingdom Battle (which had multiplayer), that include:
1) Flexible difficulty, including an invincible mode. You can also reset skill points should you make a mistake.
2) Mario dual wields guns that can shoot 2 enemies and Peach is immediately playable from the start with a boombrella that is basically a shotgun. However, you start off with 2 characters to choose for fighting instead of 3 and there is no multiplayer from the first game. Bowser is also playable.
3) You can skip animation sequences (the overwatch interrupts to react to a moving enemy in sight take time) and fast forward enemies.
4) There are more varieties of Mario enemies and you can throw bob-ombs after dashing into them to have them explode into other enemies. However, you cannot move after attacking enemies.
5) You don’t have to backtrack when resuming a saved game.
6) There have been a lot of patches to fix things, like the menu load times (6 seconds patched out to be instant).
Overall, I find this cover strategy RPG to be a fun improvement though it helps to know differences as well as not rush to buy the overpriced, unfinished $30 DLC (the 2nd has vague info and the 3rd has Rayman). The base game definitely isn’t worth more than the sale price given the frequency it occurs.

Overall if you enjoyed the first installment, this sequel provides a pretty similar experience. Some of the battle gameplay has been given additional polish and small improvements. However they tried to open up the explorable worlds and a lot of the overworld interactions and puzzles came out pretty rough. I also had to completely turn off the voice audio about halfway through the game. About 90% of the voice acting is done by a single extremely grating character. I also miss acquiring and equipping new weapons, something that’s been removed relative to the first game (there are only weapon skins now). This was probably done because weapon + spark management was perceived as too much for some players.

Delivered in perfect condition. The game lets you select your difficulty to play on easy or hard modes so that helps make the game as challenging as you want it to be. Diverse roster of characters with different styles of support and the addition of Sparks adds a new layer of strategy. DLC so far has been good too.

A fun and worthy sequel to the incredible Kingdom Battle game.
Pros: A little longer than the first at 55-60 hours to complete 100% of tasks (if it lets you.) Replaces the original’s grid-based mechanics with a circular distance mechanism. The game is still based on a grid, but allows characters a bit more freedom of movement and shows distances in a circle surrounding the character to give a greater sense of realism.
Cons: Even less attached to the Mario series than the first game: Mario & Company could just as easily be replaced by more Rabbids with little loss to story. A rearrangement of the techniques used by characters in the first game makes some much more useful than others (particularly Rabbid Peach and Luigi.) No undo system this time, and once a jump or landing is performed (even if by accident) you are committed and a mistake can leave your character wide open to attack. The game also has a huge amount of bugs: both graphical, with lots of pop-in and plane shearing, and functional, with characters getting infinitely stuck alternating between two grid squares, the game randomly crashing after a targeted enemy is defeated (especially in the final battle), and one of the quests does not register as completed no matter how many times you do it. For a game that took many extra months of development and is now 3+ weeks from release without resolution, such bugs do not reflect well on Ubisoft or the latest version of the Snowdrop engine. Were it not for such obvious defects it would be worthy of a perfect score.
Some have also complained that the Rabbids are now voiced (short two or three word fragments mostly) and have dialogue, but I didn’t mind. It’s explained in-game as improvements in Beep-Os translation system that has occurred since the events of Kingdom Battle.
